Highland CattleKim decided to get some Scotch Highland Cattle. We've started with two young heifers, Pua and Ali'i. Anuenue, Kalani and Leilani have joined the fold, and all are munching happily.
Our "girls" are not only very cute, they are great foragers, and even eat scotch broom (an insidious shrub weed that chokes out native plants and is invading the Pacific Northwest with a vengence). They are shorter than typical cows, have long, soft hair, great triangular heads, and sweet personalities. Their meat is said to taste like buffalo and is low in fat and cholesterol. They are easy birthers.
Our Highlands are an important component of our forest management plan. Of our 60 acres, twenty are overgrown Oak forest, with some Douglas Fir and too much poison oak. Our girls are clearing the underbrush and poison oak for us. Dave and a very nice neighbor are cutting dead and near dead trees to create riding and hiking paths, and then the whole family splits and stacks the wood. Back to nature...
